10 Beautiful Children’s Books about Birds

We adore birds. We love learning about them, watching them, feeding them, and reading about them! There are so many amazing books available about birds that would be fantastic additions to your homeschool lessons! I went a little rogue with this booklist and didn’t include any of your standard non-fiction books. Those are absolutely wonderful as well, but for this post, I wanted to focus primarily on picture books! I am so excited to share this list with you because they are such wonderful books that I think you will love!

The Big Book of Birds

I am going to start things off with a book that still hasn’t been released. I know…that is kind of cheating…but I have a good reason. You see, The Big Book of Birds is written and illustrated by the AMAZING Yuval Zommer. You may be familiar with his other books; The Big Book of the Blue, The Big Book of Bugs, and The Big Book of Beasts? If you haven’t seen these books, you must. They are gorgeous and absolutely packed with wonderful information! You need them. For reals. So, I have chosen The Big Book of Birds because I KNOW it will also be amazing…and I have seen sneaks peeks inside…and it’s dreamy! The Big Book of Birds is published by the awesome Thames & Hudson and it is a big beautiful book! I cannot WAIT to get ours…I pre-ordered it so it will arrive on its release day, June 4th, 2019.

**edited to add that I have since received The Big Book of Birds and it is FANTASTIC…even better than I had hoped!

Counting Birds – The Idea that Helped Save our Feathered Friends

Next up is Counting Birds – The Idea that Helped Save our Feathered Friends by Heidi Stemple. I recently included Counting Birds in my blog post about the best books for Earth Day. I included it because it is a wonderful book that explains to children the importance of watching and studying birds. It discusses conservation and how just by counting and recording birds, you can help! Counting Birds is beautifully written by Heidi Stemple and the gorgeous illustrations are by Clover Robin. It is full of wonderful non-fiction information about birds as well as introducing kids to ornithologist Frank Chapman. Counting Birds is published by Seagrass Press.

Bird Watch

Next up is Bird Watch. Bird Watch is beautifully written and illustrated by Christie Matheson. You will immediately be captivated by the lovely artwork. There are birds to seek and find on each page and also involves an element of counting. Bird Watch will introduce you to many different types of birds and even discusses bird watching. The illustrations would be beautiful jumping off points for creating your own nature journals as well! Bird Watch is published by Greenwillow Books which is an imprint of Harper Collins.

Birds and Their Feathers

Next up is Birds and Their Feathers. It is breathtaking. I have only recently discovered this lovely book and I am so glad that I did. It is absolutely gorgeously illustrated and is packed with information about birds and their feathers. It goes into details about different types of feathers, their functions, and why birds have them. Author/Illustrator Britta Teckentrup has created not only a fact-filled book but also one that you can’t take your eyes off of. This one is wonderful for both children and their parents! Birds and Their Feathers is published by Prestel Junior.

The Egg

I am including The Egg closely behind Birds and Their Feathers because it is also written and illustrated by the amazing Britta Teckentrup. You will be blown away by all of the gorgeous illustrations of birds and their corresponding eggs. I do have to mention that The Egg is not only a book of birds eggs, you will also learn about different egg-producing creatures such as sea turtles and insects. This is another one that will be well loved by both adults and children. The Egg is also published by Prestel.

Feathers: Not Just For Flying

Feathers: Not Just For Flying is a book I have had for quite a while. I purchased this one back when we first began to learn about birds. This is another absolutely beautiful book that is also packed with information. Throughout the book, you will learn all about the function and importance of feathers. I have to tell you, I didn’t realize how much I DIDN’T know about feathers! This is the PERFECT addition to a nature study because you will not only get the elements of a non-fiction book but you will get it presented in an almost nature journal fashion with collections of lovely illustrations.  My kids and I used this book as inspiration for our nature journals and painted and labeled the parts of the feather. Feathers: Not Just For Flying is written by Melissa Stewart, illustrated by Sarah S. Brannen, and published by Charlesbridge.

Sounds of Nature: World Of Birds

Oh my goodness, is this a gorgeous book. Now, I am not usually drawn to books that make noise. I think it goes back to my kids younger years where they had Dora the Explorer and Elmo books didn’t.ever.stop.talking. Anyway, never you fear, this is nothing like that. World of Birds is by Robert Hunter and it is a must-have. What I love about this book is that it explores 10 different habitats of birds. In each habitat, you have a chance to learn about the different birds…and HEAR them. The sounds make you feel like you are right there. The illustrations are absolutely gorgeous as well. This is another amazing book published by Wide Eyed Editions!

A Nest is Noisy

Next up is a Nest is Noisy is written by Dianna Hutts Aston and illustrated by Sylvia Long. This is an incredibly illustrated book with very beautiful poetic words. Not only is it beautifully written, but the amount of information you are able to learn about nests is incredible! It is so detailed in both wording and illustrations that you come away with so much knowledge! As with The Egg, A Nest is Noisy will look at the nests of animals other than birds, but a great deal of information is shared about birds and their nests. A Nest is Noisy is published by Chronicle.

An Egg is Quiet

An Egg is Quiet is another lovely book written by Dianna Hutts Aston and illustrated by Sylvia Long. This book is gorgeous from endpaper to endpaper! SO many amazing types of eggs are introduced. Over 60 kinds of eggs! Kids will absolutely LOVE the illustrations and beautiful poetic words. In addition to bird eggs, you will also read about dinosaur eggs, ladybug eggs, and so much more. Absolutely wonderful. An Egg is Quiet is also published by Chronicle.

The Boy Who Drew Birds: A Story of John James Audubon

The last book I have chosen is called The Boy Who Drew Birds: A Story of John James Audubon. I chose this book because not only is it lovely, but because John Audubon was such a pioneer in the study of birds! He also created some absolutely gorgeous paintings of birds. This book is so inspirational and will encourage children to want to watch and study the birds themselves. The Boy Who Drew Birds is written by Jacqueline Davies, illustrated by Melissa Sweet, and published by HMH Books for Young Readers.
