Have I ever mentioned how much I love picture books? Once or twice? Maybe? Ok…well, I really do love them. A picture book can tell a story, it can make you laugh, it can hit you right in the feels, and it can send a message! It’s Okay to be a Unicorn did ALL of those things and much more! I am excited to introduce you guys to Cornelius J. Sparklesteed and his fantastic unicorniness!

Welcome to Hoofington

The town of Hoofington is a wonderful place to live! It has a library, a doughnut shop, an art store, and most importantly…Hoofapalooza Park where the annual Hoofapalooza Festival is held.

Cornelius J. Sparklesteed is a resident of Hoofington just like all of the other horses…well, he is not EXACTLY like the other horses. Cornelius has a secret. It is a pointy secret that lives under one of his handmade hats. Any guesses what his secret might be? Cornelius is a UNICORN! Sounds pretty fancy, right? Well, there is one problem. The horses of Hoofington have some pretty strong opinions of unicorns…the rumors are pretty bad. I mean, can you believe that unicorns fart rainbows?!? I know, right? The horror!

Well, Cornelius is a well-loved and well-respected member of Hoofington. He makes glorious handmade hats and this year he was chosen to perform in the final show at Hoofapalooza!! Cornelius gets to work creating the most glitterific and rainbowtastic costume that has ever graced the Hoofapalooza stage. Will his friends still like him when they find out his secret? Will he have the courage to finally let everyone know who he really is? And will they still like him when they find out the truth?

You may have guessed by now that I adored this book! It sends such a powerful message of the importance of being yourself and the importance of being kind…but it isn’t presented in a preachy manner! Author Jason Tharp has taken such an important topic and has presented it in such a relatable, light, and fun manner! Kids (and their grown-ups) are going to adore this book. The bright illustrations and fantastic puns are going to be crowd-pleasers, I know they were at my house! I would love to see this book being shared in schools all over the world…because who couldn’t use more kindness in their life!! Spread that kindness like glitter!!!

Speaking of kindness…author Jason Tharp is a pretty amazing dude! He travels the country speaking to kids and adults about embracing their unicorniness, about being kind to themselves and others, and about being the best THEM that they can be!
