There is so much awesomeness I want to share with you so let’s jump right in!
How to Teach Art to Children
Before we jump straight into sharing all about what is in each section of the book, I want to share with you some of the key features that How to Teach Art to Children has that makes it a home run in my book!
- Multiple Ages– As a mama that is homeschooling 3 kiddos at 3 different age levels, it is so incredible to find a resource that I can use with all of them! This book includes so many wonderful art projects that I can adapt for each age level or ability level of my kiddos.
- Book List– Be still my book-loving heart. Evan-Moor has included a list of books and background information on each artist that is presented. THIS.IS.GOLD. We always attempt to tie in books when learning about any subject, so when the leg-work is already done for me I am thrilled.
- Bonus E-Book– I was so ecstatic to see that when you purchase How to Teach Art to Children that you will also receive a free E-Book. This is a downloadable PDF that features full-color pieces of artwork that you can print and display for your kids! Such an incredible addition!
Part 1: Learning About the Elements of Art
Part 1 of How to Teach Art to Children is dedicated to learning the 7 elements of art. If you are like me and can’t remember what the 7 elements are, they are line, shape, color, value, texture, form, and space! Each of these elements is introduced with a definition followed by several hands-on art projects to demonstrate the element. Each project will include a materials list and step by step instructions on how to complete the project. I love that the majority of the materials being used are everyday things that I already have on hand! It makes it so nice to be able to plan out a project without always having to run to the store! Don’t worry if art is not your area of expertise, these projects are extremely user-friendly and are things that anyone can do!
Part 2: Using the Elements of Art
Part 2 of How to Teach Art to Children is dedicated to learning about famous artists and how they put the 7 elements to use in their artwork. This is my favorite part of the book! You will see art from artists such as Paul Klee, Vincent Van Gogh, and Georgia O’Keefe as well as art from such cultures as Ancient Egpyt, Chinese Bookmakers, and Medieval Architects!
Each section will have a brief introduction to the artist or culture followed by a reading list of suggested books! This just makes my bibliophile heart go pitter-patter! I always love to incorporate books into every topic we learn about, so to have the research done for me is incredible! This is such a time-saver and makes reserving books from the library in advance a breeze!
You will also have a materials list as well as step by step instructions with photographs on how to complete the project. This book is written in such a user-friendly way that even a parent who might not be too confident in the area of art will have no problem teaching their children!
BONUS- I am so excited about the bonus resource e-book! This allows you to have beautiful printables at your fingertips! The bonus e-book gives you access to beautiful, full-color photographs that you can print out as you study each artist and piece of artwork in Part 2! These are wonderful high-quality images that will really help your child visualize the elements of art that the artist used! They make beautiful additions to your homeschool room as well!!
