My love for the Alphabet book series from Sleeping Bear Press is no secret. I have been using them since the beginning of our homeschool journey and tie them into just about every subject. Today I want to share with you a brand new title that is bee-u-tiful! H is for Honey Bee- A Beekeeping Alphabet is a must-read! Not only is this the perfect book for a unit on bees and pollinators, but it is a wonderful lesson about nature, the environment, and conservation. This is an absolute Home-Run from Sleeping Bear Press. I can’t wait to show it to you!
H is for Honey Bee- A Beekeeping Alphabet
We are just starting our 5th year of homeschooling, and if I have learned 1 thing in those 5 years, it is this…homeschool mamas LOVE bees. They love teaching about bees, studying bees, drawing bees. All of the bee things. Well, this book is the perfect addition to ANY study on bees and pollinators!
First of all, keeping to true Sleeping Bear Press alphabet book format, the book is the perfect combination of rhyming verse and non-fiction goodness. Each page has a sidebar that is packed with information about bees, beekeeping, history, honey, pollination, conservation…you name it, it is here! I know I have”droned” (bee pun…not sorry) on and on about how much I adore these books…but it is true. They are such gems. Not only are they absolutely gorgeous books, but the amount of information that is packed into these pages is just fabulous. You could plan a complete unit around these pages of these books and I promise, you and your kids will learn a TON!
From the very first page of the book, you can tell that author Robbyn Smith van Frankenhuyzen is passionate about bees and beekeeping. She has been keeping bees since 2012 and her knowledge shines through on the pages of this book! I learned SO much by reading it!!! The writing flowed so beautifully and tied in so wonderfully with the illustrations. Speaking of illustrations…these are absolutely stunning. Illustrator Eileen Ryan Ewen as created such warm and glorious illustrations. They are absolutely beautiful and eye-catching!
My thoughts
You may have guessed already, but this book was an absolute winner in my book. It has everything I want in a book…amazing illustrations, beautiful verses, and more info than you could ever want! So so great! Something I adore about the alphabet series is that they appeal to such a wide ranges of ages and levels. I have 3 kids, 13, 11, and 9…all of whom loved this book. I am slightly older than them…slightly…and I loved it as well. There is just something about a picture book that makes them ageless in my opinion. But, these books inparticular are just so well suited for every age. If you have a young child, you can easily just go through and read the rhyming verses and enjoy the pictures. If you have an older child, you will be blown away by just how much info is packed into a picture book. Truly awesome.
