I am just going to come right out and say it. Homeschool Moms love mushrooms. If you follow any homeschool families on Instagram…then you will undoubtedly stumbled across a post or two dedicated to mushrooms. I dare say it might border on a love affair with these delightful fungi. So, this post is for all of you mushroom loving homeschool families. I have just received the most delightful and beautiful “Ode to Mushrooms”. Sleeping Bear Press has done it again…beautifully combined non-fiction with enchanting lyrical text. Huge thanks to Sleeping Bear Press for sending me a review copy! Who is ready to check out Mushroom Rain? Let’s take a peek!

Mushroom Rain

It is no secret that I adore Sleeping Bear Press books with my whole heart. They have a gift for finding books that seamlessly combine non-fiction with lyrical text. The result? Absolutely beautiful, engaging, informative, and fun books.

The latest book, Mushroom Rain, is a perfect example of that marriage of non-fiction and beautiful written word. Mushroom Rain is a fantastic introduction to the wildly weird and fascinating world of mushrooms. Did you know that mushrooms are more closely related to animals than they are to plants? Nope, me either!

Throughout the pages of this book we learn about the mushroom life cycle, we examine some of the strange shapes and SMELLS (maple syrup scented say what?!) that some mushrooms have, and we learn about the phenomenon of mushroom rain…what the heck is that?!?

Also included is fabulous back matter including a glossary, an art activity, and even more mushroom facts.

Want a sneak peek inside? You know you do!

Here are a few pages from inside the book. Isn’t it stunning?

Why I Love Mushroom Rain

I have to start off by talking about the illustrations. Mushroom Rain has some of the most enchanting, vivid, colorful, and just plain old gorgeous illustrations. Artist Jamie Green uses big bold colors often set against a black background and the pages just POP. They are the perfect complement to the text! If you a sucker for endpapers…Mushroom Rain is going to make your day. These endpapers are gorgeous and truthfully would make delightful homeschool room wallpaper.

Now, onto the writing. Author Laura K. Zimmerman has written such a fantastic book. The words easily flow across the page and will delight even your youngest reader or listener. You are learning about mushrooms but it isn’t presented in a way that is at all overwhelming or overly technical which is perfect for the picture book crowd.

I absolutely adore this style of book. There is something about the perfect balance of lyrical writing and facts that just appeals to my homeschool booknerd heart. It is such a fantastic way to learn. It isnt intimidating and is accessible to all ages.

If you are a lover of mushrooms or an educator of any kind preparing a unit on mushrooms, the forest, or fungus in general…definitely check this book out. It would make a wonderful addition. This book would also pair perfectly with the Mushroom Identification Cards my friend Allyson has over at Tanglewood Hollow!
